What Does Love Mean To Me

I shared this last week on Instagram and decided to share it on my blog and add a few things to the list.

This month we celebrate Valentine’s Day, yes another holiday created by Hallmark but there is history behind the holiday of roses, candy, expensive dinners, or gifts depending on who your partner is. There are so many stories about Saint Valentine and the meaning behind this holiday of love. I won’t get into the history, just GOOGLE it!

What does love mean to me? This question is both easy and challenging. Here goes the babbling:
Love is a feeling.
Love is bigger than everyone of us.
Love is not only romantic.
Love helps us live and grow.
Love protects and connects.
We can’t survive without it.
Love at first sight is looking at your new born baby.
Love is guiding, teaching, protecting, practicing and learning.
Love is silence.
Love is loud.
Love is making sacrifices.
Love is giving and receiving.
Love is human.
Love is not cruel or mean.
Love is not only about making it.
So many are wanting, seeking and fighting over it.
Look no further than within yourself.
Love is accepting.
Love is respect.
Love is gratitude.
Love is not hurtful or manipulation.
Love is truth.
Love is without ego.
Love is passion for what sets your soul on fire.
Love is a state of being.
Love is our dreams.
Love is our actions.
Love shouldn’t hurt.
Love should be equal.
Love is skinny, fat, short, tall, black, white and every color of the rainbow.
Love is life and life is love.

The strongest love I have ever felt is being a mom. The kind of love that can make your heart cry when they are sad or sick. Struggling and confused. The “what if’s” that keeps us up all night. 
This love is the strongest. 
The strength that keeps me going. The drive, passion, and sacrifices is all because of the love for my kids. This is love. This is the strongest love I have ever known. It was love at first sight. 💕

Love Your BOOBIES!

We Love Boobies!! Let’s save them by living a clean, healthy, toxic free life. Obviously there are some things we can’t fully control. Genetics and our environment but we can take action with preventative solutions such as diet, supplements, diet, exercise and less trips to the drug store.

The last few weeks I have been some research on our armpits and boobies and the things we can do to prevent the “C” word.

“Over 85 percent of the lymph fluid flowing from the breast drains to the armpit lymph nodes. Most of the rest drains to the nodes along the breast bone. Bras and other external tight clothing can impede flow”-Michael Schachter, MD.

If you ask any holistic women’s health Practitioner they will tell you that breast heath is a daily thing, and us women need to take it more seriously. We have so many unhealthy breast practices, from ill fitting bras to diets high in inflammatory foods and cooking oils. But no one wants to live in fear constantly right? So what can we do to help our boobies stay healthier and lymph system work well?

DILUTE and apply these three topically as often as you can:

Frankincense supports our breast heath on the cellular level, used topically or internally Frankincense has been shown to reduce instances of free radicals impacting our body, increase cellular vitality and support cellular renewal.

Clary Sage is considered the “women’s tonic herb” and it also functions as a tonic for our breasts.  Apply topically for skin support, tenderness, and circulation support.

Cypress supports normal circulation of fluids in our body. Use topically in clockwise motions aimed towards the underarms to help the lymph fluid flow and restore circulation to areas under compression from clothing.

So, for years we put deodorant on everyday, sometimes twice or three times a day not knowing exactly what harmful ingredients are in them. Here is just a little “secret” list of the toxins that may make you think about your next trip to the “drug” store when you need deodorant.

Aluminum is the ingredient in antiperspirants that actually clogs your pores and prevents sweating. Aluminum exposure has been linked with the development of Alzheimer’s disease and interferes with your estrogen levels. When your body can’t process estrogen properly, there’s a higher risk for breast and prostate cancer.

Parabens is a chemical that is used in a lot of products these days as a preservative, but it is possibly one of the most harmful additives of all. Sometimes parabens act as estrogen in your body, which disrupts hormonal balances and has been linked to breast cancer and prostate cancer

Steareths

These additives are the product of ethoxylation (weakening of harsh chemical in the manufacturing process), which simultaneously produces carcinogens and dioxanes.

Triclosan

The FDA has classified triclosan as a pesticide, yet it is in the majority of brand name deodorants. It’s used to kill bacteria in the manufacturing process, as well as when it comes in contact with your skin. When triclosan is combined with water it can also create a carcinogenic gas called chloroform.

Propylene Glycol

If used everyday, this chemical can cause damage to your central nervous system, heart and liver. It is also shown to irritate skin, especially if you have sensitive skin. Propylene glycol can be harmful at as small a percentage as 2%, yet deodorants generally have a high dose of 50% propylene glycol.

TEA and DEA

Triethanolamine (TEA) and diethanolamine (DEA) are chemicals can seep into your skin and affect your liver and kidneys. In fact, they’re so harmful that these two chemicals have already been banned from products in Europe because they are known carcinogens

It is so crazy for all these years we are buying harmful products that are advertised and marked as “clean” with a “fresh scent”.

The Secret to Fighting Menopause

This is part two of fighting the frightening mood swings, tire around the waist and all of the other things that comes with menopause.

Guess what ladies???

It is all what you put in your mouth.

I have been reading, and reading on this even though I am officially done, I need to share with as many of you as possible because it does not have to be horrible.

In fact, did you know that in the 1800's menopause wasn't even a thing?  It was never mentioned. Hot flashes and night sweats did not exist.

It all changed around 1950 when women were rushing to their doctors with all of the common menopausal symptoms and the doctors had no clue what to do or say. "Once the big pharma companies got wind they decided to capitalize on this and the false discovery of female hormone issues was discovered".-(Anthony Williams. Medical Medium)

How did this happen?

The crops began being sprayed and modified.  All of these symptoms are caused by the food we eat.  So, don't blame the menopause, men; don't blame the menopause. The blame is inaccurate. 

So before you start blaming menopause, start reading, learning, practicing and sharing.

A few things before I close. How Two Text Messages Made My Day

This Tuesday after my 9:30 am class, as always I am so f'in happy and feeling; well; pretty f'in good. We all chat after class for a few minutes about stuff. Lots of stuff. Celery, oils, kids, and life in general. After everyone left and I ventured over to see Alison at her new store a few doors down. And what a beautiful store it is BTW.

As we were chatting I received a text message. A very, very, nice text message. At first I was confused as to why I was getting it.

As I was driving home, another message came through. Another very, very, nice text message. I said to myself "WTF"! What did I do? What did I say? I honestly could not think of why I received two sweet text messages within 2 hours. I checked my social media accounts to see what I posted. I was still confused. Normal stuff. Yoga, me, sharing what I am learning and sharing. Whatever it was; those messages made me feel really good. (Text is at bottom of blog)

Both of these text messages did not come from people who practice at SUKHA. One has been twice, and the other has never been to Brick.

Then I thought about it. Mabye it was the posts and what I was sharing.

Why am I sharing this? Well, you see I teach yoga because I want people to feel good no matter what age, size or what they wear. I am sharing the practice and other practices that I am doing or in the process of doing so we can all live the healthiest and happiest life. 

Shit, it isn't easy as we age, but we need to prevent aging and illness the best we can. Whatever I learn, I share in class or on social media. I may post three times a day or I may not post for a few days. Sometimes the post may get 30 likes sometimes 111. The numbers do not matter to me. What matters is that the post about yoga, a quote, food, oils, skin care, or my son playing a sport reaches people. Reaching people to learn, practice, to be healthy, happy and grow. My posts come from the heart and I say it like it is. Sometimes it may come out harsh or bitchy but it all depends on how it is being read and by who.

If I post a quote, it means something to me and I feel it may strike a cord with someone else. 

By sharing your stories, experiences and lessons you have learned you are providing an opportunity for people to learn. You can take what you want, ask questions,  and choose what you want to act upon. 

LEARN-APPLY-SHARE-TEACH but do it AUTHENTICALLY. Your way. Authenticity is meant to be imperfect. If you mess up, that's okay. If you can't do a pose, that's okay. If you have a crappy day; well, WE ALL DO. Even the Instagram Famous have bad days.They may not post it, or some write way too much. Authenticity is not an image. Authenticity for some is still having a closed heart chakra that won't bust open, dropping the F Bomb often, working hard, being slightly selfish at times and forgetting to call your mother back. 

Own your life. Own your experiences and own how you feel about those experiences.

Tips from others and experiences are all around us. Everyone has a story  that we can learn and grow from. Some will come from people with years of experience, and others that are just learning and sharing as they go along. :) 

What you think is a minor aspect of your story might just be exactly what someone else needs to move forward.

So, be authentic, learn, apply what you learn, share and teach. Remember this is not only pertaining to yoga. Although yoga is LIFE. Practice, learn, apply and share on what you learn about life.

Before I close, I want to say that I have been posting and saying for years BE YOU. I came across a note/quote that says " I would say to be yourself, but it's too cliche', so instead I will say to own yourself, and to own your life"

Yesterday's Wisdom, Tomorrow's Destiny

I am not sure why it has taken me so long to write, promote and share about what I want to share with all of you. Maybe because I have done this for years, see so many people doing it, receiving emails from people asking me to help them promote the company they are selling for. Directly or indirectly. (Directly is always best)

I get it. I have been with many direct sales companies before. It is not easy and it certainly becomes overwhelming and can be slightly annoying. Party this, indirect schemes, and people maybe coming to your place of business just to get in front of groups of people to see how it can benefit them.

So here's the deal, I think direct sales is awesome. I started with a skin care line back in 2006 before I got divorced. I needed to start saving money and to be honest I needed to get out of the house. I was passionate about the products. I worked hard to make it work. And it did. I was passionate, not pushy and very honest. 

A few years ago when I started my yoga practice, I tried essential oils. For myself and to share with my students. I have been hooked every since. I place a drop on my students third eye before class, maybe a foot massage, and a cold wash cloth after class with lavender. I did this to make my students feel good. I never promoted. Never announced. Never asked if anyone was interested in buying or selling. I just wanted my students to feel as good as I do when experiencing essential oils. If they asked, I told them.

Fast forward to present day. After learning more and more and healing with essential oils; it is time to really share the crap out of these life changing oils.

Starting with lavender for sleeping, peppermint for congestion and my sons smelly sneakers, lemon for my water to oregano oil for inflammation of my pluera. Not to mention cooking, sore muscles, fine lines and wrinkles, cleaning the house, hormone balance and diffusing. The list is long.

Essential Oils-The Missing Link in Modern Medicine

Plants not only play a vital role in the ecological balance of our planet, but they have also been intimately linked to the phyiscal, emotional, and spiritual well-being of mankind since the beginning of time.

The plant kingdom continues to be the subject of an enormous amount of research and discovery. Most often prescription drugs are based on naturally occurring compounds from plants. Essential oils are know as Man's First Medicine! From ancient writings and traditions, it seems that aromatics were used for religious rituals, the treatment of illness and other physical and spitiutal needs, They say that the people of ancient times had a greater understanding of esstial oils than we have today.

The reintroduction of essential oils into modern medicine first began during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  During World War 1, the use of aromatic essences in civilian and military hospitals became widespread. Essential oils were used extensively for their antibacterial and wound-healing properties and developed several kinds of aromatic ointments. 

A few more little pieces of information regarding essential oils vs pharmaceutical drugs that I would like to share before I finish. (my brother may not like this) ha ha 25 plus at J & J

They both have different effects on the body. Drugs usually infiltrate our bodies while having a toxic effect but essential oils on the other hand have a detoxifying effect. Pharm drugs are not really able to provide clear information for receptor sites while oils actually perform the right operations for the receptors.  Drugs usually don't provide any coverage for the immune system while oils are constantly trying to provide strength. For example, antibiotics will battle both good and bad bacteria, but essential oils will only battle the bad ones, allowing our body to maintain a strong immune system.

The information on essential oils is never ending. There is so much out there to read on these oils. It is truly amazing.

I don't remember the last time I really wore makeup. Who needs it? Luckily, not me at 46 1/2. Maybe some mascara. Some is genetics and most is self care. I use coconut oil mixed with frankincense or geranium. Two drops. A bottle lasts a very long time. Use it on your face, diffuse it, drink it, clean with it. So many uses for these oils for these oils without breaking the bank because they have multiple uses. So you can trash your toxic household cleaners, stop wasting money on spices that will eventually go bad and stop dropping big bucks on moisturizer when you can buy a tub a coconut oil. People say "It's so greasy and doesn't absorb". Well, are you putting it on your skin that needs to be exfoliated??? DRY BRUSH prior. Your face and your entire body. Dry brushing helps shed dead skin cells and encourages new cell renewal. By one for the face and one for your body. (CVS or Rite Aid) Then you can apply the oils on your face for smoother, brighter, younger looking skin. Or you can make your own exfoliator using coconut oil, sugar and essential oils. 

Coconut oil uses are endless as well!!! Cooking, baking, and cleaning. You will save money.

Celery Juice, No Gluten (I learned the hard way), Essential Oils, Coconut Oil, Yoga, Good Books, Good, loyal, trustworthy friends, healthy, happy, independent, smart kids and a roof over my head,  and running water is all I need. My great grandmother lived until 96, two aunts passed at 104 and 105 with one still living. Their secret? OIL!!!! Ha ha and homemade pasta!!!

Is SUKHA for beginners only? That seems to be what people think. The answer is no. SUKHA is for everyone. Yoga is a practice for the mind, body and soul whether you have been practicing for 1 day or 15 years. We learn new poses everyday. So, EVERYONE is a beginner. No one knows it all. We are not GOOGLE.

Just like life, we learn something new every day.

Leave the ego at the door. There is no need to look for the toughest teachers and force yourself to get into the toughest pose. Why? So you can post a really fast picture on Instagram and walk out limping? 

Advance your practice by going back to the basic fundamentals.

Every teacher has a different way of approaching a pose and describing it. All of the teachers at SUKHA have a different way of teaching. We make sure everyone in the room is comfortable no matter what level.

We all have a different "personal practice". It doesn't mean we teach that way. 

We ALL modify every class accordingly based on each students level. That is what teachers do. We accommodate; modify and support. EVERYONE! EVERY CLASS! 

Open up your mind, maybe go back to the beginners mindset and be proud of how far you have come.

This Saturday, June 17th at 10:30, join Maria Preuster for a Back Bending workshop.  Learn the fundamentals as your open your heart and your mind.

Saturday, July 15th at 10:30, join Melanie for "Yoga FUNdamentals". Whether you are new to yoga, or don't know your asana from your elbow, this workshop is for you. Build confidence on and off the mat by going back to the basics. From breath work to modifications. First class or 101st class. We can all use a refresher. 

All welcome. Except EGO. They can be left at the door.

99 lbs, 110 lbs, 120 lbs, 180, lbs, 160 lbs, 140 lbs..I have hit them all!!

Yep!!! I have been all of the above!!!  

 

My first real weight gain was my freshman year in college, coming home for Thanksgiving with the added 15 lbs from beer, pizza and all of the Ramen Noodles I could possibly eat.  One comment at a party motivated me to run the bleachers at St. John Vianney every day with my brother until it came off. Loosing the weight quickly and headed back to school I stayed motivated and started running. I began to realize that my weight was never going to be consistent and that I had to really work at it and watch what I put in my mouth and exercise daily. 

My second biggest, was pregnancy! Obviously. But I would have never thought that someone with my build could get so big!!! 180 lbs with both kids!!!  After my first, it took 6 months to come off. After my second, it took a long, long time. I was in a size 18 down to a 6 within one year. Still not the size I should be for my height and build.

I have been up and down with my weight since College.  Taking care of myself has always been a priority for me. My mother will still tell me that I started putting Oil of Olay on my skin since I was 2!!

The purpose of this post is to share that I have been all sizes in my adult life and it does not come easy. 

I am focused 

I am motivated

I am vain

I love food.

I do eat bad from time to time. (Did someone say PORK ROLL FRIES??)

I do drink alcohol occasionally.  (LOVE BEER)

I do yoga everyday 

I row for 10 minutes twice a week

I go on the stair climber twice a week for 10-20 depending how I feel. (I hate this machine) JK

I walk weather permitting

I ride my bike weather permitting

I do things I love to do. 

I am active. It is hard for me to sit still.

I don't sit or lay on the couch.

I don't watch TV

I am 105 lbs today and I could be 115 lbs next week. It all depends on what is going on with my body. I am not shy to say that I am going through menopause at the young age of 44. It started 2.5 years ago with the hot flashes and night sweats. It comes and goes. I refuse to let it change me mentally and physically.
