Honor Your Voice to Awaken Others

Last night I listened to another amazing podcast from Oprah with Zainab Saibi. It was truly ironic that I had just posted a blog about women sharing their stories and not holding back because you never know who you can help.

Zainab Saibi is a humanitarian, author and founder of Women for Women International. Her story, her message and what she has done and continuing to do is truly amazing.

This podcast opened with “Giving Women a Voice”-Letting Women share their stories. Honoring your own voice to awaken others for new possibilities. Help heal so others are not alone”.

Mind you, I had just posted my blog and this is what I heard within minutes. I felt relieved and happy. Some may say, I should only be teaching yoga and call it a day. Why?

I was very broken and I have been putting the pieces back everyday. As I am mending myself, why would hold back from sharing with others? That is called selfish.

This blog is not about how I am going to try to save the world or that I want to be the next Oprah or Yoga Girl. I just want to be me and teach how I want to teach, learn, share and help others who are interested in doing the same through yoga, conversation, blogs, email, text message or social media. There is so much to learn. As we age, the learning does not have to stop and everyday we are offered the opportunity to learn and grow. No one “Knows it All” so don’t be one. Be open to others ideas and opinions, and always remember there is always more than one way besides your way to look at situation.

With that being said…..

Happy Menopause Monday!!

Why are so many women embarrassed to discuss menopause? There is nothing to be ashamed

of. Going through these changes does not make us less of a woman or less attractive. It may cause weight gain, crankiness, exhaustion, low sex drive, dryness, hair loss, mood swings, rashes, bloating, constipation and so many other attractive side effects.

But guess what? All of this can be controlled!! Don’t let what you read online fool you. Read the Medical Medium to find out.

About eight months ago, I decided I needed to remove gluten from my diet for a few reasons and weight loss was not one, so don’t roll your eyes. I was having extreme digestive issues and rashes on my hips. Juicing and gluten free worked!!! No more bloat, itchy rashes. I felt great.

About three weeks ago, I went bad. This summer has been challenging with cooking. The kids are rarely home so I haven’t cooked because they are out with friends. I caved. My family was in town, I went to visit my mom and HAD to have her sauce, and a few late afternoon early bird happy hours with the BF. Well, going  bad was horrible. I developed itchy rash behind both knees and a few days after, I started bleeding. CRAZY!!! I haven’t had a period in years. WTF!!!

As most of us do these days, we run to Google before the doctor. “What causes bleeding after menopause”? The answer:

Vaginal bleeding after menopause isn't normal and should be evaluated by your doctor. Post-menopausal vaginal bleeding can be caused by: Cancer of the uterus, including endometrial cancer and uterine sarcoma. ... Thinning of the tissues lining the uterus (endometrial atrophy) or vagina (vaginal atrophy)

Not the answer I was looking for, so I kept searching only to find the same response, if not worse. So I called my doc and the next morning I was having a ultrasound and three days later having a endometrial biopsy. Both tests were negative. A cyst on the ovary and a polyp on the cervix. Nothing to worry about except going back in two months for another.

I truly believe that all of these situations are caused by food. Of course you won’t find that on Web MD. But you will find out from being fully in-tune with your body.

The Rolling Stones sang it best: “Time is on My Side” and guess what? So is menopause.

Anthony Williams states in his book, “Secrets Behind Chronic and Mystery Illness and How to Finally Heal: (BUY IT)

“Menopause is actually on your side. Believe it or not, the aging process slows down after menopause. That’s not the message that is out there. Women think of menopause as the onset of aging and age-related health problems-when in fact it’s just the opposite.”

“Women are told reproductive hormones are the fountain of youth. The irony is that your youth wasn’t in your 20’s, 30’s or 40’s. Your true youth happened before puberty. Reaching menopause is a way of reconnecting with that time. Menopause ends the reproductive system’s cycle (and its drain on your body) and brings down reproductive hormone levels. It’s the body’s natural way of slowing down aging so that you can live a long, healthy life”-Anthony Williams

How lucky am I to slow down the dreaded aging process at 47? I have now accepted this stage of my life and looking forward aging and living a happy, healthy life. Perfectly Imperfect. My way. By learning, practicing, sharing and teaching.

A Better Boat

It’s that time of year again but this year I decided not to count the minutes, the days or the months that I have been here on this earth. (But I may do a cute post with a sign that says how many months old I am) ha

Counting just makes it seem that much longer and make the hand on the clock move that much faster. I am learning to try and slow the fuck down. I breathe in, I breathe out.

I started writing this blog a few days before my 47th birthday. For the simple reason of time. It flies by, there is not enough of it, time is precious, of the essence, an illusion, on my side, it heals wounds, time is not wasted if you enjoy doing what you are doing. And that is EXACTLY it. I am enjoying everything that I am doing.

This past year I have learned so much personally and professionally. I have dug deep and looked on the inside on what I needed to work on, what my triggers are and the things I need to fix to continue to evolve. And I have done the same with others. I have felt their energy, sadness and fear, happiness and relief, bitterness and resentment. Authenticity and fake. It was a year of digging, learning and clearing. I have increased awareness to interpret myself and others much deeper than before on so many different levels. And I wanted to share what I have learned during year 46.

Lately, it has been the onion and the mask. Reading, thinking and trying to figure it all out. Let’s remove the first layer of the onion my friends. Take off the mask. Behave and appear the same everyday and everywhere. Stop hiding your authentic self. Although I have seen many “true colors shining through” this last year. Do the inner work!! Once you dig you will realize what a great person you are. Lose the ego. Peel back the layers and be yourself. Stop following the crowds, and show up where you want, when you want and most importantly walk in without a mask. Throw it in the trash. Because guess what? That is exactly where it belongs.. And I don’t give a shit what town or county you live in or what car you drive or how big your house is. You are all amazing, beautiful beings. Show the real you. Thinka bout this...After the mask comes off, begin peeling off all of the layers. What's left?

" I ain't lonely, but I spend a lot of time alone. More than I'd like too. But I'm okay with staying home. My how the last few months have changed. I'm smiling more despite the pain"

Yes!! I am not sure what happened. From extrovert to introvert!! I am actually proud to have this come out of mouth. Most treat introverts as weird  or a personality trait. Some just get physically exhausted by spending a lot of time with other people. I have found that I need alone time to rest and recharge so I can continue to do what I do everyday. I sit and enjoy life without being in constant motion with others. Maybe it's because I am now 100% aware and tapped into those who are authentic and those who are not and I prefer to be around authenticity. I choose wisely.

Happy Hump Day, July 18th. I am back continuing the blog for what I have learned during year 46.There is so much I want to write and it may just be a mish mosh of crap so bare with me.

Let’s go back to 1973. I was two years old and I specifically remember watching The Wizard of Oz belly down with my hands under my chin, close to the big, old school, hand channel changer tv with 2, 4,5, 7, 11 and 13. I buried my head everytime that scary, green faced, screechy wicked witch with those cheesy long ass nails would come on the screen. It didn't take so long for me to stare at the screen and look her straight in the eyes. After 45 years of watching this movie over and over again I always found a new meaning. A deeper meaning. But nothing as deep as this amazing book I discovered just a few months ago. I have shared it in class but feel the need to share it today, on my 47th Birthday. This movie is a part of me. It always was and always will be.

“It is a story we remember, believe, and cherish in our hearts. To each generation, the story rises and blooms anew in the psyche. It is a story invested with all of our potentials and highest ideals, as well as our shadows and terrors.  It speaks to the basic human need for companionship. It is innocent and sincere. As it remembers a golden age in our past, it simultaneously portrays a technological golden age in the immediate future. We find the security of place, the assurance that we have in us a sufficiently of capacities to confront evil and survive, and the ability to trust in our own enormous untapped potentials.  Then, like Dorothy, we can come back and re-green the wasteland, the Kansas of our lives. We are OZ. In any mythic structure we may identify with the hero, but in truth we contain all of the characters. Dorothy might be any one of us. Or we might be the Tin Man in our longing to feel loving connections, the Scarecrow seeking our true intelligence, or the Cowardly Lion seeking courage. We contain the Great and Powerful Wizard. What would happen if we dared to dip into this high and holy magic within ourselves??”-The Wizard of Us.

This movie has so many lessons that so many of us can learn from and The Wizard of Us is one book that I am learning from everyday. It just makes sense to me. I can relate 100%.

For many years on this earth, I cared so much of what others thought of me. The last few, specifically this last I have finally removed that completely out of my head. It no longer exists. Theo Roosevelt said it best “I care not what others think of what I do, but I care very much about what I think of what I do” That is character!”

I have taken the time to really figure out who I would like in my life. Those who I value, respect and trust and those who respect and value me just the same. Those who are real, who lead and don’t follow. The people who can understand and accept decisions I have made or need to make and some were harder than others that’s for sure. Each decision has been a true lesson and wake up call that goes back to wearing masks and living a truly authentic life. I have made a commitment to myself to send only love, kindness and sympathy to those who portrayed themselves to be something they are not. I have let go of the situations that have occured. From phony emails and phone calls to cards and letters blowing smoke up my ass saying how much I changed their lives and then once things didn’t go their way; the real people under those masks appeared.

“A balanced individual is free to make the choice to change something if they’re comfortable with feedback that may be unflattering”-Wayne Dyer

Oh boy, did I get feedback. Ha ha.

I will continue to go on a rampage of appreciation rather than discussing the evils of the world and take every opportunity to continue to radiate joy whether you are on my side or not. Today, as I am approaching my 47th birthday I am sending nothing but hug and kisses to the evils of my world and everyday hope that halos are given and pitchforks are thrown in the trash along with the masks. Thank you for the lessons.

Boundaries.

Now this has taken a long time for sure and I am still working on it and the first step has been to practice self-awareness personally and professionally. SUKHA is a place of business and not a free for all. I will no longer allow a student or teacher to dictate or demand how I operate. I am always open to suggestions and there is now a suggestion box in the studio. In the beginning of my journey I have let too much get by. I have had past students drive to my house and threaten me if I raised prices, I have had negative comments thrown at me if I did not come around with oils, etc...Of course we all know people such as these have so much inner work to do. They just don’t seem to get the true meaning of yoga. With that being said, in November of 2017, I had felt like I failed as a teacher. With the number one thing coming to mind-”Did they not listen to ANY of my dharma talks? Holy shit, all the time and preparation and they still don’t get it but that’s okay. I get it now. I now fully understand that not everyone thinks they have healing to do and that many only think of yoga for the physical benefit or a social hour. Some people make situations so easy to walk away from. (Especially when you have a bird chirping in your ear front and center that likes to stir the pot)

I will continue to share even if some don’t fully understand the real reason why I am here

and what I am teaching and sharing. I congratulate everyone of my students who are on their authentic journey and practice yoga for the work-in.

As far as the personal boundaries go, well; I believe I am almost there with certain people that will unfortunately be in my life for a long time.

"I breathe in. I breathe out. What ain't working, what's still hurting. All the things I feel like cussing out."

Always remember, no person, no place, and no thing has any power over you, for you are the only thinker in the situations you create. When you create peace, harmony and balance in your mind you will find it in your life.

Competition.

It is only a word. Something I do not want to participate in. When I first opened SUKHA I was expecting peace, love and happiness from all and that was not the case. But again. That’s okay.  When it comes to the “C” word the best thing for me to do is mind my own business and that is exactly how I operate. I still struggle with others stealing Intellectual Property. Everyday I try to now to send peace to those who can’t seem to think for themselves, it’s been challenging, but I’m getting there. I am always flattered, but it still gets me heated. The hours and time brainstorming for someone else to steal? Ugh.

From the bottom of my heart, all yogis are welcome to SUKHA to practice. Not to spy,or have any alternative motive but to practice. And keep in the back of your mind that SUKHA is not only for beginners and we leave egos at the door and continue to keep it real. On the mat and off. On the screen and off. My wish is for yoga instructors all over the world to share this beautiful practice with as many people as possible and from the  heart, I wish you all nothing but the best on this magical, yet challenging venture. Always remember to be yourself. Teach how you want to teach and what feels right to you. Be your authentic self and teach that way. Let go of the script and teach from your heart. Your book and your lessons. Make people smile.

Healing.

Even at this age I am healing every freakin day. Healing from old wounds, present day bruises and learning to accept things that I can’t change.

I am trying to figure myself out and this is just the emotional healing. What I have learned is that any physical problems are caused from emotional issues that we carry and hold on to and I have many. This year I have found the root cause of a few and have found ways to heal through juice, essential oils, and making a change to my diet and letting go and removing blockages caused by people, places, and food.

To end this mish mosh of a blog, I would like to end with this:

I am proud of my flaws and I have so many and I will continue to work on them everyday.

I breathe in. I breathe out.

“We are each responsible for all of our experiences.

Every thought we think is our future.

The point of power is always in the present moment.

Everyone suffers from self-hatred and guilt.

The bottom line for everyone is, “I’m not good enough”.

It’s only a thought, and a thought can be changed.

We create every so-called illness in our body.

Resentment, criticism, and guilt are the most damaging patterns.

Releasing resentment will dissolve even cancer.

We must release the past and forgive everyone.

We must be willing to begin to learn to love ourselves.

Self-approval and self-acceptance in the now are keys to positive change.

When we really love ourselves, everything in our life works.”-Louise Hay

Thank you for reading, learning, practicing and sharing with me everyday. It’s going to be a great ride and I wouldn’t jump off just yet if I were you. :)

"I think I'm stronger than I was. I breathe in, I breathe out. I got friends to call who let me talk about. What ain't working, what'still hurting. All the things I feel like cussing out. Now and then I let go around the waves I can't control. I'm learning how to build a better boat"-Kenny Chesney

Listen to it here. It's a good one! (Amy may even like it) :)

If you think you know it all, you are not listening..

What a great quote!!

Learning, practicing, sharing and teaching has been my mantra the last week thanks to two text messages that made my day.

I have said it before and I will repeat it again; it doesn't matter how old you are, how many degrees or certifications you have; how much money you make or have in the bank. We have to continue to learn. If not, learn to learn, learn to practice, share and teach. If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you.

This is for everyone. Especially the "know it all's". UGH. Now there's one on my pet peeve list. No one knows it all. There is so much out there to learn. Stop dismissing opinions, comments, ideas or suggestions of others.

There is so much to learn about in this life and as I am approaching 47, I want to learn more now than I ever have. Obviously, time is a factor, but I am finding the time either at 5:00 am or 5:00 pm. Whenever I have a few extra minutes or an hour.

Mother, yoga instructor, business owner, daughter, sister, friend. Still learning everyday on how to be better at all of the above. I will never be perfect, and that's okay. There is NO SUCH THING. Nobody has a perfect yoga practice (I don't care what fancy pics you see on social media), daughter, boss, business owner and definitely a perfect parent. If you think you are, write a book and please share.

Everyday I am listening and learning from people, books, pod casts and blogs. Two years ago I was introduced to essential oils. I loved the smell and purchased a kit not really knowing exactly all of the amazing benefits. I used them in my yoga classes. As a few months went on, I continued doing homework, listening to a friend about the benefits, reading her posts and digging deeper. I then started using them on my face, neck and chest. Then colds, sore muscles. And holy shit!!! They work.

Did you know that doTerra oils are pure plant derivatives, with no pesticides or fillers and have the highest quality testing and can be ingested? The oils in Whole Foods and other companies are not pure. Who knew? Now I do. I am learning, practicing, sharing and teaching. One drop of lemon oil is equivalent of 20 squeezed lemons! Our sense of smell is so powerful, and immediately upon breathing in an oil, this purifying and calming effect begins to work the limbic system of the brain that deals with; emotions, memories and stimulation. This system connects parts of the brain that deals with high and low functions for thinking and movement.

Now there's some interesting facts that I bet you did not know.

What has essential oils done for me? The list is long. But first, my skin. Tighter, smaller pores, crows feet lines are reduced, my skin tone is more even especially on my forehead where I had major sun damage, and the wrinkles on my chest have reduced tremendously.

I share what I learn, so I am sharing with you.

Join me Friday May 5th at 6:00 pm for a FREE one hour information session on using essential oils for your skin. The oils I have been using and I will review the top 10 doTerra oils. These oils can be use aromatic, topically, internally and in the home. Safe and kid and pet friendly.

Why should you do a cleanse?

Our bodies are incredible organisms with  a natural built-in filtration system to help us get rid of toxins. Believe it or not we are exposed to more toxins than any previous generation. . This influx of toxins comes from our food, pollution in the air and water, toxic ingredients in beauty care and household cleaning products, electric and magnetic fields from technology, and more. These harmful substances have an extremely negative impact on our health and we are seeing the result of this with the onslaught of chronic disease, serious  illness and general degeneration of our bodies. The primary organ and powerful built-in filter that helps our bodies to process excess toxins is our liver.

The primary goal of this detox is to lighten the toxic load that our bodies are currently experiencing. It gives our liver a chance to rest and catch up! The results are feeling more energy, vitality, clarity and much more! And that's just the beginning. During this cleanse you will learn about many different eating plans and uncover what will work best for you.

Yesterday's Wisdom, Tomorrow's Destiny

I am not sure why it has taken me so long to write, promote and share about what I want to share with all of you. Maybe because I have done this for years, see so many people doing it, receiving emails from people asking me to help them promote the company they are selling for. Directly or indirectly. (Directly is always best)

I get it. I have been with many direct sales companies before. It is not easy and it certainly becomes overwhelming and can be slightly annoying. Party this, indirect schemes, and people maybe coming to your place of business just to get in front of groups of people to see how it can benefit them.

So here's the deal, I think direct sales is awesome. I started with a skin care line back in 2006 before I got divorced. I needed to start saving money and to be honest I needed to get out of the house. I was passionate about the products. I worked hard to make it work. And it did. I was passionate, not pushy and very honest.

A few years ago when I started my yoga practice, I tried essential oils. For myself and to share with my students. I have been hooked every since. I place a drop on my students third eye before class, maybe a foot massage, and a cold wash cloth after class with lavender. I did this to make my students feel good. I never promoted. Never announced. Never asked if anyone was interested in buying or selling. I just wanted my students to feel as good as I do when experiencing essential oils. If they asked, I told them.

Fast forward to present day. After learning more and more and healing with essential oils; it is time to really share the crap out of these life changing oils.

Starting with lavender for sleeping, peppermint for congestion and my sons smelly sneakers, lemon for my water to oregano oil for inflammation of my pluera. Not to mention cooking, sore muscles, fine lines and wrinkles, cleaning the house, hormone balance and diffusing. The list is long.

Essential Oils-The Missing Link in Modern Medicine

Plants not only play a vital role in the ecological balance of our planet, but they have also been intimately linked to the phyiscal, emotional, and spiritual well-being of mankind since the beginning of time.

The plant kingdom continues to be the subject of an enormous amount of research and discovery. Most often prescription drugs are based on naturally occurring compounds from plants. Each year millions of dollars are allocated to private labs and universities that are searching for new therapeutic compounds that lie undiscovered in the bark, roots, flowers, seeds, and foliage of jungle canopies; river bottoms; forests; hillsides; and vast wilderness regions throughout the world.

Essential oils and plant extracts have been woven into history since the beginning of time and are considered by many the missing link in modern medicine.  They have been used medicinally to kill bacteria, fungi, and viruses and to combat insect, bug and snake bites in addition to treating all kinds of mysterious maladies.  Oils and extracts stimulate tissue and nerve regeneration.

Essential oils also provide exquisite fragrances to balance mood, lift spirits, dispel negative emotions and create a romantic atmosphere.

This is not a trend my friends.

Essential oils are know as Man's First Medicine! From ancient writings and traditions, it seems that aromatics were used for religious rituals, the treatment of illness and other physical and spitiutal needs, They say that the people of ancient times had a greater understanding of esstial oils than we have today.

The reintroduction of essential oils into modern medicine first began during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  During World War 1, the use of aromatic essences in civilian and military hospitals became widespread. Essential oils were used extensively for their antibacterial and wound-healing properties and developed several kinds of aromatic ointments.

A few more little pieces of information regarding essential oils vs pharmaceutical drugs that I would like to share before I finish. (my brother may not like this) ha ha 25 plus at J & J

They both have different effects on the body. Drugs usually infiltrate our bodies while having a toxic effect but essential oils on the other hand have a detoxifying effect. Pharm drugs are not really able to provide clear information for receptor sites while oils actually perform the right operations for the receptors.  Drugs usually don't provide any coverage for the immune system while oils are constantly trying to provide strength. For example, antibiotics will battle both good and bad bacteria, but essential oils will only battle the bad ones, allowing our body to maintain a strong immune system.

The information on essential oils is never ending. There is so much out there to read on these oils. It is truly amazing.

Doterra oils are carefully and thoroughly tested using the strict CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade quality protocol. If you are experienced with essential oils, you will immediately recognize the superior quality standard for safe, purely effective therapeutic-grade doterra essential oils.

Before I stop writing; I want to share with you my favorite oils.

Frankincense-Part of my skin care!!! Emotional and hormonal balance, healthy immune system, blend it and diffuse it for a peaceful and spiritual environment.

Sleep!!- Lavender for sleep and dark circles, and tired, puffy eyes.

Peppermint-Stomach aches, headaches, respiratory, tight and sore muscles, bad breathe.

Oregano- Sinus, arthritis, inflammation, prevents infections, anti-fungal

Geranium Oil- SKIN!!! Amzing, clear, beautiful, young skin!!! Balances hormones, alleviates effects of menopause.

Lemon- Respiratory, household cleaner, add to water to support healthy respiratory function

Wild Orange- Circulatory stimulant, insomnia, fluid retention, wrinkles and fine lines, household cleaner

Rosemary-Liver-protector, anti-cancer, mental clarity, anti fungal, anti bacterial

Ylang Ylang-  HORMONES!! Balances male-female energies, enhances spiritual attunement, combats anger and low self-esteem, hair loss

Clove- anti-inflammatory, sore throat, stomach issues, sinus and lungs, toothaches, acne, numbs pain (waxing)

Ginger-Muscular aches, arthritis, digestive aid, congestion

I have so many more and I will be posting often. I always say that I share what I believe in; so that is what I am going to do. We are not getting any younger, take care of your body the natural way. Who wants to look their age? Who wants to look their age without spending a shit load of money on expensive skin care products? Less is more in my opinion. I don't remember the last time I really wore makeup. Who needs it? Luckily, not me at 46 1/2. Maybe some mascara. Some is genetics and most is self care. I use coconut oil mixed with frankincense or geranium. Two drops. A bottle lasts a very long time. Use it on your face, diffuse it, drink it, clean with it. So many uses for these oils for these oils without breaking the bank because they have multiple uses. So you can trash your toxic household cleaners, stop wasting money on spices that will eventually go bad and stop dropping big bucks on moisturizer when you can buy a tub a coconut oil. People say "It's so greasy and doesn't absorb". Well, are you putting it on your skin that needs to be exfoliated??? DRY BRUSH prior. Your face and your entire body. Dry brushing helps shed dead skin cells and encourages new cell renewal. By one for the face and one for your body. (CVS or Rite Aid) Then you can apply the oils on your face for smoother, brighter, younger looking skin. Or you can make your own exfoliator using coconut oil, sugar and essential oils.

Coconut oil uses are endless as well!!! Cooking, baking, and cleaning. You will save money.

Celery Juice, No Gluten (I learned the hard way), Essential Oils, Coconut Oil, Yoga, Good Books, Good, loyal, trustworthy friends, healthy, happy, independent, smart kids and a roof over my head,  and running water is all I need. My great grandmother lived until 96, two aunts passed at 104 and 105 with one still living. Their secret? OIL!!!! Ha ha and homemade pasta!!!

Crystal Ritual and Facial Experience

You may see a few people in class having a special crystal on their mat, around their neck, in Reiki or speaking of their healing powers.

Crystal healing uses the vibrations o crystals to heal. Each crystal has a natural healing vibration and color. The unique vibrations are introduced to your body and energy field to vitalize, to heal and to balance. Crystal healing uses the natural minerals of the earth.

Crystals act as conduits for healing-allowing positive, healing energy to flow into the body as negative, disease-causing energy flows out.

Join, Lorene Colon on Thursday, April 12th at 11:00 for a Crystal Ritual and Facial Experience. What a great way to relax and heal.

You will pick a crystal that speaks to you along with a card describing the meaning of the crystal you chose. You will keep the crystal during your Vegan Facial and take it home with you along with a goodie bag!

Come relax, get a facial and learn about the amazing benefits of crystal healing. It's another tool for your toolbox.

Take care of you! You deserve it!!

I am Woman

Saturday more than 200,000 protesters attended the march in NYC and cities across the country protesting the Trump administration, applauding the #metoo movement, equal rights and so on. Thumbs up to all who attended.

Well, this blog is not about "#metoo", "I'm with Her", "Hear Our Voice", "Girls Rule", "Women Rock", or the best I have seen: "Pray For Our Pussies"!!!

Yes, it is about women. For all women not matter how old because one day you will all be here. Some may be closer than others or some may already be there.

I have been wanting to share this when I first had the call from my doctor back in December, but to be honest; I was kind of embarrassed. Blood test in. I am done!! It's official.

But after thinking of the last 4 years of  perimenopause I feel the need to share with all women about the full experience and what you can do to make the most out of menopause. Most woman dread it because of the symptoms that come along with it.

Everything you hear and everything you read will scare the shit out of you. Just do it. GOOGLE Menopause Symptoms.

  • Pain during sex
  • Fatigue
  • Night sweats
  • Hot flashes
  • Dryness
  • Loss of hair
  • Anxiety
  • Irrtability
  • Moodiness
  • Reduced Sex drive
  • Vaginal Dryness

Sounds hot right? In my opinion, it is. Every situation is different and it is all how each woman handles it. This is a milestone. Embrace it and think of it as a chance for new opportunities and potential for personal and professional growth. Everyone has the tools to make this time of your life amazing.

I am 46 years young. It just so happens that my ovaries no longer release eggs and produce estrogen.

The last 4 years have been interesting for sure. Embarrassing hot flashes anywhere at anytime. Sweat stash, red face,  and the back of my neck so wet it was like I just got out of a pool. Definitely not the most pretty site or the most comfortable.

But I learned. Learned to wear layers, tank tops under long sleeve, short sleeve over long and zip up hoodies or cardigan sweaters. Easy on. Easy off. You have a few choices to have fun with the hot flashes. You can moan and groan, cry and complain, or do things that will help make this uncomfortable, embarrassing, situation better. Here are a few tips to get through hot flashes:

  1. Don't eat spicy foods.
  2. Limit caffeine. (my biggest mistake was not cutting out coffee)
  3. Drink water. Lots of water and Green Tea. (Green tea I did. It also helps with belly fat)
  4. Nothing lasts forever. Even hot flashes. You will feel them coming on, start your strip tease, sip cold water, put your hair up, wipe off and BAMM! Done.
  5. Clary Sage essential oils is a life saver during this time. Carry it with you everywhere. Rub on the back of your neck and the bottom of your feet.
  6. Don't complain about it. Let it happen. The more you bitch, the worse it is.

And then came the night sweats!! Now, this was disruptive for sure but only for a short period of time. Again, you need to have fun during this time of your life. Most do not. Everything in life is what we make of it.

The first night I remember being scared. I thought I was sick. Getting up in the middle of the night soaked. My second thought was that I wet the bed!! Now that is something I have NEVER done. (even during my younger, partying years).

I spent hours searching and the only thing that appeared was Menopause. I ignored that because there is no way in hell that I was going through that at 42.

They continued. Every night. Changing sheets. Clothes on. Clothes off. Cold. Hot. So fucking annoying. Luckily I do not share a bed with anyone! After a few nights of this, I needed to figure out how to make the best of this so I would not be exhausted.

When  the first drop of sweat began to form, I began to think of myself practicing yoga on a Island on a very hot day. Very hot. Flowing and generating my own heat as well as the 100 degree temp. The visualization made me smile and by the time my trip was over so was that particular sequence and I knew another would be approaching shortly. So I toweled off and took a child's pose.

Few tips for night sweats:

  1. Layer in the winter.
  2. Sleep naked or in shorts and a tank in the summer.
  3. NO WHITE SHEETS.
  4. Have water and towel bedside.
  5. Wear your hair up!!!
  6. Suck on ice cubes before bed.
  7. Lavender oil!!! Diffuse it and put a few drops on a cotton ball under your pillow. Lavender will help you relax and have a better night sleep.
  8. Take Black Cohosh supplements. This will help with both hot flashes and night sweats.
  9. If you share a bed, you may want to guide him  on the same meditation to a hot yoga class. Make sure he brings a towel!! Or use plastic sheets and go on a fun slip and slide! Could be kinky!!! You can make it fun or you can make it miserable. Your call.

Mood Swings

Well, this is the topic where I must say that shockingly I wasn't so bad. I rarely went on a rampage. I never really have the need to unless it is 100% necessary. If anyone messes with me, my kids, lies, steals or cheats; I will loose my shit. Estrogen or no estrogen; STAY AWAY! ha

I found myself being short a few times at home. Not too bad thou. No real reason to. Not married, kids are well behaved,  teen hormones are kept under control and thankfully, they are very independent and don't ask for much.

Teaching yoga has helped tremendously. It is amazing how you can wake up on the wrong side of the bed, have coffee, feel blah and the moment your first student walks in and start to teach your mood vanishes!!! It is magic!!! Unless of course you fully absorbany negative energy that may be in the room, which is a no-no. This I have learned rather quickly a few years ago.

A few tips on how controlling your irritable, grumpy, defensive, hormonal self.

  • Wake up with a positive mind. Let the first thought be a positive one. Most wake up complaining. "I'm so tired", "I don't want to go to work", "Night sweats are brutal". Remove the negative thoughts ladies. It sets the path for the entire day. MISERABLE. Remember moods are contagious.
  • "A closed mouth says nothing wrong". If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it. You will have the days where everyone and everything is annoying the hell out of you for no reason.  Sit back, breathe, and let it pass. Go for a walk, go to yoga or to a quiet space in your house.  "It's thought that mood swings are related to the fluctuating levels of ovarian hormones during the transition to menopause...Woman who had severe PMS in their younger years may have more severe mood swings during perimenopause"-N.A. Menopause Society
  • Listen to music that will lift your spirits. Music is the medicine for the mind!!
  • Frankincense!!!!! My life saver the last three years!! The benefits never ending. It is the king of all oils. Frankincense reduces stress, negative emotions, prevents signs of aging, balances hormone levels, and helps prevent illness. I apply it on my crows feet, third eye, upper lip and chest, behind my ears before bed, sakral chakra, bottoms of my feet and prior to boarding any flight to prevent vertigo.
  • Surround yourself with like-minded people. During menopause you should consider removing toxic people from your life. They will only bring you down, make you grumpy and sad.
  • Talk to your spouse or BF about your moods. Communicate! Tell partner what is going on with your body and your moods. Be honest about when you need space, what is bothering you, etc...Don't make them try to figure it out. If you find yourself grumpy and you are not sure why, reflect on the day. If nothing specific went down that caused your mood; take a walk, do yoga, take a bath and separate yourself from others so the energy does not transfer to your friends and family. It's not fair.

Well now here is the topic most won't want to hear. Both men and women! LACK of SEX DRIVE!

Is it true? Does it happen? Yes and Yes. But..............It does not have to be that way.

Sorry ladies, many do and will use menopause as an excuse not to have sex with their hubby or live in. (notice I did not say boyfriend)

Here are a few tips for "lack of"

  • Maca Root!! Powder in smoothies or supplement. Not everyday thou. When I started Maca, I took it everyday and it made me constipated (everyone is different). "Maca is a root vegetable that is high in antioxidants and nutrients such as vitamin C, copper and iron. It has been used medicinally for thousands of years and has been shown to enhance sexual health and libido, improve energy, mood, memory and balance hormone levels"-Dr. Axe
  • Coconut Oil!!! Dry???? With over 500 uses, Yep!! It feels good too!! Ha ha
  • Couples Yoga
  • Communicate
  • Be honest. Don't use it as an excuse. If you are; maybe you should really think if you want to be even be with him forever.
  • Any essential oil! Diffuse it, give massages, take a bath!!

Diet

For the most part, I watch what I eat. Few tips for menopause:

  • Eat light. Smoothies and soups have been the latest and greatest in the house.
  • If you eat meat, buy organic
  • Lighten up on the booze my friends. It does not help the bloat.
  • Do a juice cleanse every once in a while. It flattens your tummy and clears out toxins.
  • Lower the carb intake
  • Fruits and Veggies. I was bad with the fruit but good with the veggies. Do both.
  • Water. Lots of water.

**I am not a nutritionist. These are just suggestions and they worked for me

Fatigue!!!

Well, this was my worst during menopause. I was never one to nap until about 3 years ago. Head nodding, falling asleep anywhere at anytime; I became a napper. Something I do not like to do. It is not productive for me when there is always so much to be done.

Tips on Fatigue

  • Limit coffee
  • TAKE YOUR NAP.
  • Listen to your body
  • If you at work and have a hard time keeping your eyes open, diffuse peppermint oil or dilute with coconut oil and rub on your chest.
  • Eleuthero Oil or supplement: Eleuthero (Siberian Ginseng) is a powerful adaptogen that has been used in Chinese Medicine since the 16th century. It has many healing benefits including: stress, enhances energy, and improves brain function. Eleuthero being an adaptogen, it helps and re-balance your adrenals. As a result, you can combat the negative effects of stress and become energized throughout your day.  Take in the morning by mouth or you can drop the liquid in your smoothie or food.

Bloat.

Yep!! It's going to happen. Your body will change. This is the one thing I struggle with. It changes. The number may not change, but your shape does.

  • Continue to exercise no matter how tired you are.
  • YOGA, YOGA, YOGA. It helps all of the above
  • Peppermint Oil, Patchouli and Ginger. No oil? Boil hot water add peppermint leaves or Ginger. Green Tea is great too.

Well, I think I am done for now. I'm tired!!! lol

Thank you for reading and I hope you take some of this advice during your next phase. It's really not bad. It's actually been pretty good!! #mindovermatter

So my friends;  I will close with this

New Year

Well, it sure has been a while.

Happy 2018 to you all of you.

Taking some time off last week was a great time for me to spend quality time with my children and my parents and to reflect on what a great year 2017 was and how 2018 will be better.

Most of you are aware of the changes that were made at SUKHA in November and I am truly thankful for those who were supportive and are making their way to the Brick location. Many of you finished your month in Brick and are now on the "Special Pricing" for three months.

There are so many things that I would love to write about all in this post, but honestly; I will save it for weeks to come.

I don't have resolutions for this year. I have plan in place for myself, my family and my business that I will continue to visualize and support them with positive and encouraging images doing what I desire to have a great year.

Yes, I certainly have things to work on. We all do.

Anything that happened in the past was and will always be necessary for growing so we can learn. Taking the time to sit back and reflect to find solutions to problems and how I can try everyday to  be the best mom, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, girlfriend, teacher and business owner I can possibly be. This is not something that comes once a year, this should be done daily. It is hard as hell to do so, but I will certainly try my best. And I wish the best for all of you.

We all need to give up bad habits to make room for good ones.

Don't put a time frame on it. Just try to make little changes . If you really want to make changes within and work towards the best version of yourself that you can be continue reading:

1. Stop putting yourself down-Be there for YOURSELF when no one else is. You are your own cheerleader, start acting like it.

2. Stop giving up so easily.-Stop letting this WORLD tell you no.

3. STOP BLAMING OTHER PEOPLE FOR YOUR OWN MISERY.-True happiness comes from within. You are not as much of a victim as you think you are.

4. STOP THINKING THAT YOUR WAY IS THE ONLY WAY-In this life, there is almost more than one way of doing something.

5. Stop saying yes when you want to say no- Don't do it if you don't want to.

6. Stop letting others define you- You are only defined by yourself and your actions. If you accept the things people think or say about you as fact, then you are wasting your time. The past is just that. THE PAST. We can't change it and should not give it power. Move on and become who you are meant to be.

7. Stop letting people use you as a doormat- You are a person. A amazing, beautiful person. Stop letting people control you and use you. Be your true self.

8. Stop wasting your life- Do things that YOU WANT TO DO.

I wish you all a happy and healthy new year! I hope to see you all soon.

Please continue to check the app for any schedule changes and the website for the 2018 Specials.

You will be seeing new names on the schedule in weeks to come! The Gypsy Soul Teachers in Training have started to teach as part of their training.

The Crystal Bowl Meditation and Card Reading will resume this week. Tuesday night at 7:00 and Friday morning at 11:00 am.

On January 20th at 11:00 am Editor of Elephant Journal and author of Hug Your Chaos and Fractured; Lindsay Carricarte-Jones will be hosting a workshop about the chakras, healing, energy work and empowerment. You don't want to miss this. They are in NJ for a short period of time until they head back to CA.

On February 3rd, Kim Traverso will be here from Hawaii to hold a FREE Essential Oil class at 11:00 am.

Many of you express interest about the oils. This session you will learn how to use the oils, how they expedite the healing process and why they are causing a shift across the globe!!

Speaking Your Truth

Well, here it goes my friends. It has to be blogged one of these days and tonight is the perfect time to speak my truth about something I have been holding back on for a while now.

As many of you know, I have not been practicing for too long. My story is short and sweet and pretty f'in cool.

I tried it, I loved it, I went to training, I starting teaching, Recreation asked me to teach yoga, it grew, and grew. And here I am today. The truth. Two studios later. Minus a few "friends". But I have gained a shit load more. That are my family. Real, genuine people who practice yoga at SUKHA. They respect me, the teachers, and most of all the SUKHA Philosophy.

Years ago when I was living in NYC. I was living uptown and Maria was living downtown, I remember her telling me she was going to study to be a yoga teacher. Yoga was not big then. BUT, if anyone would be a yoga instructor it was her. You see, my impression of a yogi, was always someone like Maria. Since the day I met her in 1986. Sweet, caring, honest, real and she would do anything for anyone. Maria never got angry. Maria always spoke her truth. Maria is a good friend. A friend who is proud of my accomplishments, a friend who teaches, a friend who does not lie, a friend who asks for advice and a friend who gives amazing advice.

So, years later, I always thought that ALL YOGIS were like Maria. The Truth.

I was wrong. After the Squan studio grew, I grew, my yoga community grew and I began to get heat. And I am still getting it. #everydamnday. From who? Just guess.

It is getting old. The mystery phone calls from other studios, the yoga instructors walking into SUKHA South giving false names, looking at my sign in book instead in my eyes and pretending they are someone they are not just to get information, the instructors that were hell bent on getting my book of business so they can bring it to another studio. The list goes on.

Are these people truly practicing yoga? They may be physically practicing, but are they practicing the Five Yamas?

Let's just talk about the second shall we?

Yama 2: Satya TRUTHFULNESS-seeing and reporting things as they are rather than the way we would like them to be.

REFRAIN FROM TELLING LIES and speak with kindness, compassion and clarity.

If you have any questions, my fellow yogis, please call me directly stating your real name. If you want to come in a take a peak, tell me where you really teach and what your intentions are. Want to grab a bite to eat? Call me. Let's Chat. I am lots of fun. Come take a class or ask any of the SUKHA Family. I am sure they will fill you in.

I am not perfect. I announce that I am not perfect. I may not teach the yoga philosophy in all of my classes, but my dharma talks always go to a yoga teaching in some way. And I ALWAYS speak my truth. Sometimes too much. This blog is a perfect example.

I am not focused on being Instagram famous or being a Ambassador for a clothing line.

My number one focus is to make feel people comfortable, happy, confident and to teach yoga in a non-intimidating atmosphere and have fun while doing so.

Helping others is very important to me. Volunteering my time for LOCAL charities and foundations without a reward in return.

The communities where I teach have been so kind to me and it is my turn to give back.

So, the bottom line is. Speak your truth. Be kind. Practice yoga off the mat. If you teach it, make sure you practice.

I am not competing with anyone. That is not my goal. You run your business and I will run my business. So.....MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS.
