12 Days of Slow Living

This month I participated in the #12daysofslowliving Challenge on Instagram with Beth Kirby. Now, slow living is not something I practice. Moving at a slow pace does not come easy for me. It never has. Some health issues the last year and this fall has told me that I have to start. This challenge came at the perfect time. Normally I do not participate in social media challenges. I like to offer them, especially 28 days of yoga for $28 or to get my shy clients out of their comfort zones. The Grind and Shine Yoga Challenge is to practice yoga everyday for 28 days.

If any type of challenge is offered to me, it needs to be something I really need to incorporate in my life.

Slow Living and lots of yoga.

Last year, my body was giving me the signs. The signs to slow down. This year, my body was screaming at me. October is a “productive” month for me. Workshops, back to school, sports, and this year SUKHA hosted the first yoga retreat. It was non-stop. After the retreat, I was not myself. Everything was a blur. My lungs, my brain, my gut. Physically and mentally foggy.

Once again, thank you to Maryjo Kurtz at Wellnecessity for all of her services and guidance to getting me back to the healthy me. I try to see Maryjo as much as I can and I highly suggest you do the same!

Slowing down is something I must do but I feel as if when I do, important things may slip through the cracks. This challenge so far, has encouraged me to do a few little things in my daily routine. Self care has always been part of my life it is routine, but slowing down and embracing the time is not. Now don’t get me wrong, I do not rush through life, or am I always in a “rush” , or “can’t get my shit together”. I am very balanced but I rarely take the time to sit back and appreciate drinking cup of tea or be aware of how blessed I am to have nature’s gifts to heal my body.

My children will always come first and I am so fortunate that I have the flexibility to attend games, cook them dinner and be there for them whenever they need me.

When my body gives me the signs to slow down, I never can understand how I am supposed to slow down when I have so many big responsibilities. I am one person doing so much. No wonder one of my Spirit Animals is the Octopus. Speaking of the Octopus; I decided it was time to have a logo for my personal brand. I have had these visions of part octopus, with some SUKHA branding incorporated but never thought I would be able to find someone who understands my thinking. Well, I did. This is the power of Instagram. All the way from Denmark I found a talented, creative, patient, responsible, professional, beautiful Graphic Designer who understood what I was looking for and created my logo. Thank you Anamarija Designs

How can I possibly slow down? This mind never stops.

This challenge has showed me to take the time, notice and appreciate the time I spend slowing down.

Here’s a recap of the first 8 days

Day One/Meditate

Day Two/Move

Day Three/Hydrate

Day Four/Nature

Day Five/Nourish

Day Six/Glow

Day Seven/Create

Day Eight/Relax

Day Nine/Indulge

Everything I have done so far with only a few days left is posted on Instagram @mbwishes and Facebook @myblogsaboutlife

Today is Day Nine/INDULGE and I did exactly what my body was calling for. “Do something luxurious for yourself”

Most people automatically think of indulging as eating a burger, fries or candy. Today I needed to relax my muscles .after a week of teaching and practicing in a Infrared Sauna at Current Recovery & Performance new location on Brick Blvd. I was honored to have a tour of the new, spacious and clean facility yesterday and went back this morning after my class for a 35 minute session in the sauna. The staff is friendly, kind, and extremely knowledgeable.

Current Recovery offers TPI Golf Screening, Cupping, Cryotherapy, Spot Cryo, Normatec and ARRC Therapies. Now Michael explained these to me yesterday in detail but my brain could not soak all of the amazing information in one sitting. But stay tuned. I will go back and bring my son. Current is not only for people with injuries. These services are perfect to prevent injuries.

Day Nine of Slow Living was worth writing about. I feel amazing, my skin looks even better and I took 40 minutes of my morning to detox, relax and move slowly.

Now, back to my normal routine of working, cooking, cleaning, laundry, wrapping and getting ready for Christmas. I am now able to actually hydrate SLOWLY and embrace every sip. Thank you Beth!

I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!!

Don’t forget to take time to S L O W D O W N

Many thanks again to Beth Kirby, Maryjo, Current Recovery and Anamarija!!

A Touch of Heaven. Infrared Sauna, Coffee Enema.

“If you always do what you’ve always done, You’ll always get what You’ve got”-Henry Ford

There are so many meanings of this and so many ways of interpretation. Today, it is being in tune with your body, listening to it, and doing something about it.

Last October, just like this October was super busy for me. Always on the go and never taking the time to sit back, say no, take a scan of myself and find stillness.. Almost exactly a year ago, I had that scare. The shooting pain in my left shoulder and racing heart. No fucking way was I having a heart attack. But then again; it’s possible. My grandfather died of a heart attack at 42.

I stayed up all night refusing to fall asleep. The last thing I wanted was to die in my sleep and have my kids find me. The next morning I dropped the kids at school and drove myself to the ER. They hooked me up ASAP!! Heart was good. The lungs not so good. They told me my pleura was inflamed and I probably had pneumonia and did not know it. Of course the scripts were thrown at me like the local high school football players and cheerleaders throw candy off the fire truck during the Thanksgiving Parade. I took them for a few days until I switched to Oregano Oil in a capsule and it worked!!!

Fast forward. Here I am again, almost exactly one year ago with the same pain, but so much worse. Is it seasonal? Stress? Or the constant going, going, going and not stopping? Who knows. What I do know is that I need to find stillness more often, say no and slow down. I have been non-stop for years. Survival mode. Going and going and always feeling great. But was I really? Maybe I was and once menopause kicked in things started to change.

As we get older, everything changes. Our hormones, our gut, our heart, our liver, our skin and pretty much almost everything. It’s not fun but it doesn’t have to be that way and keep in mind it all starts with food. Food is the foundation to our health and well being.

This year I have learned so much from such amazing, intelligent women who have guided me through gut and hormone health, liver and lung health and so much more. Attending convention was eye opening and having many conversations with Kim Traverso and of course my many visits and talks with Mary Jo Kurtz.

Mary Jo wears many hats and brings many tools in her tool box as a health and wellness coach. She has spent the last 25 years studying, exploring and educating herself and all those she comes in contact with about the endless possibilities for healing on all levels. Her approach to healing embodies the true meaning of mind, body and spirit connection. She is a Nutrition and Holistic Health Coach, a Reiki Master Teacher, an Integrative Energy Therapist, a Spiritual Counselor and Ordained Minister Practitioner who uses a myriad of holistic tools to help her clients.  On any given day Mary Jo may talk to you about Traditional Chinese Medicine, your blood type, genetics, food, fears, emotions, your chakras, toxins, your energy field or anything else. She will bring it all together to help guide you to what might be going on with you and help you choose a direction for true healing.

My last visit with Mary Jo was eye opening, relaxing and rejuvenating. As always we started with a “Touch of Heaven.” This therapy is my favorite!! Well, one of many. This therapy helps to promote healing deep within the body. Touch of Heaven is exactly that even though I don’t know what heaven is like but if I had to describe one of the feelings that I think heaven is like, this would be it.

While laying on her heated crystal far-infrared biomat Mary Jo first checked, opened and balanced all of my chakras. She then checks which essential oils my body needs before placing them along the spine and on my feet. The essential oils speak with the cells, release and restore balance and harmony. Who doesn’t need that??? If I could go once a week, I would.

Now I have done this therapy many, many times. This visit was different.

I had called Mary Jo a few days before my visit because I was not feeling good at all. I couldn't pinpoint it, but I was off. I had belly bloat, my back was bugging me, I had no coloring in my face, my eyes seemed pale as well if that is even such a thing. Emotionally, I was just off. I felt like a chilly, fall, rainy morning with a thick fog hovering over the Glimmerglass Bridge unable to see through it at any time during the day. It needed to be lifted so I can parent and teach. I needed my energy. I was craving health but I could not understand why. Gluten was removed from my diet, I hardly eat meat or dairy. I juice. Hell, I just had come back from a yoga retreat and we ate healthy.

Mary Jo added a new therapy that I find absolutely fascinating. After “Touch of Heaven” Mary Jo began to a Bio-Energy Evaluation which helps to evaluate the bio-energy field to see what might be the cause of my energy blocks - probably at the root of what’s going on with my body. In doing this she uses a combination of Direct Resonance Testing, Muscle Testing and Autonomic Response Testing. She uses the energetic frequencies of types of stressors like heavy metals and various microbial toxins like fungus, virus, bacteria, and more as well as the frequencies of things like homeopathics, vitamins, minerals and other supplements. The substances are introduced into the bio-energy-field with the help of specialized devices called Signal Enhancers. In the end Mary Jo uses a combination of all the information she gathers from the energy field to help to come up with a plan for the most effective changes that anyone can make with regard to their diet, supplements, lifestyle, thoughts, emotions and beliefs in order to make changes necessary for a more balanced and healthier life.

And then as if that were not enough! It was time for the finishing touches with a new addition to Mary Jo’s services: Infrared Sauna time!!! OMG, was it hot. But a relaxing, hot. Twenty minutes of detoxification that you don’t get in a gym or a hot yoga studio.

Infrared saunas can help increase blood circulation and release built up toxins in the body. This sweatbox helps to support the immune system, great for aches and pains, stress reliever and fatigue.

The last 5 minutes, I wanted out but I knew I needed to complete this detox so I could feel alive again.

Time was up and I was out!!! I felt slightly dizzy, but light. My skin coloring returned and the fog was lifted. Floating in heaven and sweating in a box of relaxation for detoxification. I am on my way.

And now for the conversation….

After this Mary Jo and I sat down to talk about some of the things for me to consider going forward. We talked about why food is the foundation for healing and how there is no one diet that will work for everyone. We talked about how I might be missing some important nutrients in my diet and how I could get them as well as some thing that I was eating that weren’t the best for me. We also talked about the importance of drainage in the body and how my elimination systems could be improved and organs like my liver, kidneys and my lymphatic system could be supported to work better. We discussed other toxins like viruses and infections that could be in my energy field and the importance of helping my body and immune system better maintain balance so I could feel well again.

After my evaluation we discussed what my body needed to heal. The list was long. The list included Coffee Enema!!! Yep. Coffee Enema. Now, I gave up coffee once again after I wasn’t feeling well. So I am no longer drinking it, I am now inserting it. Not for weight loss but for detoxification of the body. Coffee enemas have been around since World War 1.

After the war, intrigued by nurses experience, two German professors investigated the effects. They found that the caffeine entered the liver via the portal system and caused an increased flow of bile. This bile, in turn, allowed accumulated poisons and toxins to be released and evacuated from the body. Years later, realizing the importance of detoxification, Dr. Gerson incorporated coffee enemas in his therapy.

Now, after reading about this, I had to start. I wanted to feel better and start removing toxins from my body.

I ordered the Coffee Enema Kit from Purelife. Purelife’s coffee is air roasted and not drum roasted. Drum roasting by fire can leave a toxic residue on the bean. Their unique “Air Roast” method eliminates any chance of this happening. Clean beans are VERY important since it is going into your liver.

Day One was slightly messy. Trying to get comfortable on a tiny bathroom floor, having the enema tube pretty much flying all over the place. It was a battle for sure.

After ten minutes it was time. I was done.

Twenty minutes later, I felt awesome. I was shocked. My skin color was amazing, belly bloat was gone and I was full of energy.

I sent Maryjo a message thanking her. She advised me to continue for a few more days.

Holy Crap!!! Ha ha. A few more days??

Okay. I finally had it down. In the tub I go. More space and the tub ledge is exactly the height the enema bucket needs to be. Here’s the challenge. Holding the coffee in for 15 minutes!!! Listening  to my favorite podcasts makes the time go by as I try to make the best of my morning coffee.

As I am writing this I am laughing my “ass” off that I am actually writing about this. But I have to. Toxins must be removed from our bodies and I must share with all of you so you can hopefully do the same. There are toxins everywhere my friends. In our food, household products, skin care, and of course the environment. There are so many illnesses out there and most are caused by food and toxins. Who wants to live a long, healthy life? I know I do.

Some of you may ask why can’t we just drink our coffee? So here’s the deal: “Coffee taken orally goes through the stomach causing digestive problems and affects the liver by shutting off the bile ducts.  It also raises blood pressure and tends to cause capillary spasms in the extremities.” -Dr. Gerson

There is so much to write about this, but I will let you do your homework.

I am feeling so much better than I did. Currently still working on the inflammation of the lung lining, learning, practicing, sharing and teaching. Everyday.

Thank you Maryjo for everything!!
