Essential Oils May Replace Antibiotics

June 25,2018 Articles.mercola.com

  • Scientists say the overuse of antibiotics for people and animals is lessening their effectiveness so much that even a slight injury or infection could turn into a serious medical crisis
  • Using special techniques, researchers have used the antibacterial properties of essential oils to create a bioactive coating to protect against infection, which may help prevent millions of infections every year
  • Drug-resistant bacteria has caused farmers to take a closer look at plant extracts for both people and animals, while scientists are also targeting biofilm growth on failing aquatic sensors due to marine organisms
  • Essential oils such as tea tree oil, peppermint, cinnamon and lavender have potent properties that can kill harmful bacteria strains such as salmonella and E. coli, eliminate intestinal worms and improve acne, shingles and even MRSA

By Dr. Mercola

It's quite likely that whether you visit your doctor for back pain, anxiety or an ingrown toenail, you won't leave without a prescription of some kind. Cold and flu symptoms are among the most common reasons why people visit their doctors and, often, antibiotics are the go-to remedy. Repeatedly taking antibiotics causes major problems, however, as overuse of this type of medication, both in the health care setting and in industrial agriculture, has resulted in increased resistance.

In fact, every time you take antibiotics, your body builds resistance, they become less and less effective and, worse, any bacterium that survives the medication also builds resistance. One of the worst aspects of drug-resistant bacteria, or superbugs, is that an alarming number are found on the biofilm — a thin slimy surface substance — that forms on medical devices, including implants.

In one study, Mohan Jacob, head of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at James Cook University (JCU) in Queensland, Australia and his team of Ph.D. associates used nanotechnology to harness the power of antimicrobial molecules from plants to create antibacterial coatings. Their findings were recently published in Polymers.1 Jacob cites a recent study published in Microbial Biotechnology, which reported that approximately 17 million new biofilm infections are reported every year, leading to 550,000 fatalities.

In addition, about 80 percent of the surgery-associated infections worldwide may be associated with biofilm formation.2 That's why more doctors are turning to natural agents with antibacterial properties, such as tea tree oil, as studies show it may help prevent millions of infections every year. Tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) is an essential oil that creates a bioactive coating to keep harmful bacteria from adhering to medical devices.

How a Bioactive Surface Is Made From an Essential Oil

In regard to the scientists' search for a way to turn plant compounds into bioactive coatings for medical devices to avoid having to rely on antibiotics, they used plant secondary metabolites, aka PSMs, of tea tree oil and its most important component, terpene-4-ol. Derived from essential oils and herb extracts, with relatively powerful broad-spectrum antibacterial activities, they're termed "secondary" as they're not vital to the plant's survival or function.

Jacob described them as a "low-cost renewable resource available in commercial quantities, with limited toxicity and, potentially, different mechanisms for fighting bacteria than synthetic antibiotics."3 But the biggest challenge Jacob and his team faced in developing antibacterial coatings from PSMs was converting the liquid state of the compounds into a solid without losing any of their antibacterial nature.

Medical News Today notes that scientists have used nanotechnology for this purpose for several years. Kateryna Bazaka, an adjunct senior research fellow at JCU and the study's coauthor, explained the scientists' procedure in creating polymers is somewhat like naturally occurring rubber and cellulose to make a resistant, "chain-like structure," in this case converting the PSMs of tea tree oil. She noted:

"We used plasma-enhanced techniques within a reactor containing the essential oil vapors. When the vapors are exposed to a glow discharge, they are transformed and settle on the surface of an implant as a solid biologically active coating."4

Essential Oils for Medical Device Polymers and Beyond

Plasma polymerization of this sort has been in use to create biological activity on surfaces for about 20 years. In the 2010 version of the "Handbook of Deposition Technologies for Films and Coatings," one scientist explained that plasma is the "fourth state of matter, consisting largely of ionized gas which maintains overall electrical neutrality."5

One reason the plasma technique is so effective for this kind of plant conversion is that it's environmentally friendly; no potentially harmful chemicals or solvents are used in the process that might remain in the coating or damage surfaces the coating is applied to. The upshot is that if tea tree oil can be converted to protect the surfaces of medical devices, millions of infections may be prevented every year.

According to Jacob, after publishing more than 70 research articles and six Ph.D. theses on the topic, the scientists involved in the project are bona fide pioneers in the world's development of bioactive polymers from plant compounds. But the concept has been extended. Because the thin polymer coatings are visually transparent, they're being tapped for coating contact lenses, as well as for optical windows in aquatic sensors.

Specifically, Jacob and his team are targeting biofilm growth on failing aquatic sensors due to marine organisms, working with Peter Mulvey and associate professor Jeff Warner at the JCU-based Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine. Controlled Environments notes:

"Even though synthetic antibiotics have been the best weapon for eradicating microbial infections since the arrival of penicillin, the overuse of these medications is gradually rendering them ineffective. Scientists think that if new strategies are not developed soon, medical treatments could retreat to the era where slight injuries and common infections develop into serious medical problems."6

Antibiotic Resistance Doesn't Stop There

Significantly, Cyril Gay, senior national program leader at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agricultural Research Service, contends that losing the reliance on antibiotics due to the growing instances of antibiotic resistance is one of the most challenging problems faced by the medical profession in the 21st century. One case in point, Cari Romm reported in 20147 that livestock consumes as much as 80 percent of the antibiotics used in the U.S.

Between 2009 and 2012, that number increased by 16 percent, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).8 The trouble is, antibiotics are used on humans as well; about 70 percent of those used on farm animals are deemed "medically important" for humans. In 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that antibiotic resistance in the U.S. caused more than 2 million illnesses and an estimated 23,000 deaths,9 which resulted in an extra $20 billion in health care costs.10

Experts in the U.K. expect the problem to only get worse, as a 2014 report projects that more than 10 million deaths will be attributed to drug-resistant microbes by the year 2050.11

The reason livestock are treated with those kinds of drugs is explained by yet another FDA report12 asserting that farmers and food manufacturers rely on them not just for infections but to speed growth and girth for the marketplace, and as a sort of go-to remedy for the many infections livestock incur in cooped-up and unsanitary conditions, now known as concentrated animal feeding operations or CAFOs.

Stuart B. Levy, hematologist and professor at Tufts University and author of the book "The Antibiotic Paradox: How the Misuse of Antibiotics Destroys Their Curative Powers," has been deeply concerned about the impact that is looming due to the overuse of antibiotics. His study in 197613 noted that chickens began developing resistant bacteria in their guts from the antibiotic tetracycline within a week.

It's unnerving to hear the rest of the story: The resistant bacteria became resistant to other antibiotics the chickens hadn't even consumed, and months later, the illnesses spread to untreated chickens and even to the farmers. According to Levy, "Resistance doesn't stay in that environment, and resistance is transferrable among bacteria of different types."14

Essential Oils: The New Antibiotics

Levy believes the lobby for continued antibiotic use is so strong that it's difficult for wiser voices to get legislation to change. Farmers still insist that drugs are their only choice to combat infection on their farms, so the problem is ongoing. The Atlantic asks:

"What's being done to confront this major contributor to this obvious, growing world health threat? The FDA has asked those in the agricultural industry to voluntarily reduce their use of antibiotics, but no one is keeping track of whether they do (nor has there been a record of the antibiotic use all these decades)."15

The key is to get farmers to see viable alternatives. Studies show that essential oils may exert greater power against infection than many realize. Here are several examples of how essential oils have been found extremely powerful for dealing with bacterial infections:

  • One study found that chickens eating feed with oregano oil added had a 59 percent lower mortality rate due to ascites, a common infection in poultry, compared with untreated chickens.16
  • Rosemary and oregano oils brought about the same growth rate in chickens as the antibiotic avilamycin.17
  • Other essential oils killed bacteria and helped reduce salmonella in chickens.18
  • A blend of oils can help keep salmonella from spreading between animals.19
  • Extracts from oregano, cinnamon and chili peppers helped chickens with weight gain and protection against an injected intestinal infection.20

So tea tree oil isn't the only type of essential oil studied for antibacterial potential. Drug-resistant bacteria have caused farmers as well as scientists to take a closer look at plant extracts for both people and animals. Usually associated with the scent of candles or body lotions, they're also used in products used for pest control and over-the-counter medications. The Atlantic notes:

"They're used in the food industry because of their preservative potency against foodborne pathogens — thanks to their antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal properties. Various oils have also been shown to effectively treat a wide range of common health issues such as nausea and migraines, and a rapidly growing body of research is finding that they are powerful enough to kill human cancer cells of the breast, colon, mouth, skin and more."21

Why Taking Antibiotics Wreaks Havoc in Your System

Resilient bacteria that survive can even pass that ability to resist antibiotics to other bacteria. One big problem with relying on antibiotics (by both doctors and their patients) is that it radically affects the rate it takes place, as well as the degree the resistance occurs. One thing you may not realize is that, while antibiotics are busy killing off bad bacteria that cause and prolong certain infections, they nail the good bacteria, too.

If you've heard of "good bacteria," they are what your body needs to maintain health and fight toxins naturally. When they're killed, your system is left vulnerable to all kinds of other physical problems. Are the antibiotics in the meat you eat harmful? Answer: Yes. As previously noted, the agriculture industry is responsible for 70 percent of all the antibiotics used in the U.S., which means the other 30 percent is used by humans. According to Daily Health Post:

"As the bacteria grow stronger and are no longer resistant to antibiotics, these once life-saving drugs will no longer be of any help. Minor infections will run rampant with no way to stop them. It will be like living in the Middle Ages when even a small cut could end up killing you."22

Doctors sometimes advise their patients that if they decide to take an antibiotic, to follow it with a good probiotic to make up for the damage. This is good advice (I recommend taking a high-quality probiotic both during and following antibiotic treatment); however, it's better to avoid antibiotics in the first place unless they're absolutely necessary. Even if you're not in the habit of taking antibiotics, there are other ways they can end up in your system. So what can you do? Here's a list of some healthy alternatives:

  • Consume only organic, grass fed meat and dairy products as often as possible.
  • Take an antibiotic only when absolutely necessary. Find a doctor who's aware of the issue and will only prescribe antibiotics when needed.
  • Improve and build your immune system and gut bacteria naturally.
  • Consider getting to know the properties in essential oils such as tea tree oil and others.
  • Consume fermented foods regularly.

Think Alternatively for Your Health

It's amazing how nature is already equipped to help you stay healthy and alternatively, deal with symptoms of disease naturally rather than resorting to drugs. One study, titled "Essential Oils, A New Horizon in Combating Bacterial Antibiotic Resistance," notes:

"Combination therapy combining conventional antibiotics and essential oils is currently blooming and represents a potential area for future investigations. This new generation of phytopharmaceuticals may shed light on the development of new pharmacological regimes in combating antibiotic resistance."23

Here's a short list of some of the more popular essential oils and their uses (but there are many more besides):

Eucalyptus oil aids in faster wound healing, protects from air exposure and offers antimicrobial activity

Oregano is a known protector against several bacterial strains such as E. coli, staphylococcus (Staph) and salmonella

Peppermint is useful in dental care due to its antibacterial activity and antiviral properties

Bergamot's antibacterial properties can kill parasites, help speed healing of mouth ulcers, cold sores and herpes, and combat shingles and chicken pox

Thyme is known to be effective against myriad bacteria, including MRSA and Staph infections

Lemon grass has antimicrobial properties that inhibit bacterial growth both internally and externally, i.e., urinary tract infections, malaria, typhoid, food poisoning and body odor

Lavender has antibacterial and antiseptic properties, making it good for inflammatory skin conditions like acne and psoriasis, helps speed healing of cuts, burns and sunburns and helps prevent scarring

Eucalyptus is a potent germicide and antiseptic, making it good for treating wounds, burns, cuts, ulcers, sores and abrasions

Cinnamon may be one of the strongest antibacterial oils, working against such strains as E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus

When using essential oils, a carrier oil such a jojoba or coconut oil is often recommended because they are very potent. In many cases, a topical application of essential oils is much safer than taking antibiotics internally. When in doubt, consult an aromatherapist who can provide you with more information and exact oils for your specific condition. Healthy Focus advises:

"Combine a few drops of your chosen oil or oils with a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba and apply the oil to the affected area of your body. Massaging the oil into your abdomen is also a great way to help fight internal infections. You can also apply some diluted essential oils to help treat common skin infections like acne or even warts."24

As often as possible, look to natural alternatives instead of antibiotics. Depending on your symptoms, there are many articles covered on this website that can expand your knowledge and increase your awareness of natural instead of conventional health. Mercola.com is focused on a "whole person" approach to your entire person rather than just your symptoms. In preventive health care, providers help patients develop attitudes and lifestyles that don't just fight illness, but help prevent it, too.

Make sure you do your homework on essential oils. Not all essential oils are pure. DO NOT BUY them in Marshalls or Bed Bath!! Look out for companies that have added essential oils to their skin care line or even clothing line.

I am learning everyday. There is so much and it can be overwhelming. Start small like I did three years ago with the basics. As you learn more, you practice more. As you practice more, you can share and teach.

When you choose doTERRA, you are choosing essential oils gently and carefully distilled from plants that have been patiently harvested at the perfect moment by experienced growers from around the world for ideal extract composition and efficacy.

Each doTERRA essential oil is also carefully and thoroughly tested using the strict CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® quality protocol. Experienced essential oil users will immediately recognize the superior quality standard for naturally safe, purely effective therapeutic-grade doTERRA essential oils.

While there is a science to the distillation of essential oils, it is also an art. Distillers not only rely on years of experience, they also employ modern technologies and techniques.

The most common method of extracting essential oils is a low-heat steam distillation process. In this process, pressurized steam is circulated through plant material. The essential oils are liberated from the plant and carried away by the steam. When the steam cools, the water and oils naturally separate and the oil is collected. To ensure the highest quality oil extract with the correct chemical composition, the temperature and pressure must be closely monitored. Too little heat or pressure and the oil will not release; too much, and the oil’s composition and potency will be affected.

Steam Distillation

Steam distillation is the most common way to extract aromatic compounds (essential oil) from a plant. During the steam distillation process, steam passes through the plant material. The combination of heated steam and gentle pressure causes the essential oil to be released from microscopic protective sacs. As the vapor mixture flows through a condenser and cools, it yields a layer of oil and a layer of water. The essential oil rises to the top and is separated from the hydrosol (floral water) and collected.

Some have asked about the difference between first distillations in comparison to complete distillations. The temperature for steam distilling is usually between 140–212 degrees Fahrenheit. Since different plants require different pressures, times, and temperatures, using this particular distillation method makes it possible to adjust the temperature based on the plant type, making it a very effective and precise way to obtain the purest compounds.

Expression

Unlike steam distillation, expression, sometimes referred to as “cold pressed,” does not involve heat. In this process, oil is extracted from the product under mechanical pressure. doTERRA uses expression to extract all of its citrus oils, such as Wild Orange, Lemon, Lime, Bergamot, and Grapefruit, from the rind.

Proper distillation requires a consideration for the uniqueness of pressure, temperature, time, and harvesting practices, each of which may be as diverse as the plants themselves. A poor distillation process can alter or destroy the necessary aromatic compounds that comprise the essential oil, leaving a substance far different from the intended goal and something that would not be used to support health and wellness. For this reason, the best distillation artisans dedicate their efforts and work to only a few select plants. This focused effort develops proper knowledge and experience, helping ensure congruency between the oil chemistry of the plant and its distilled form.

Yesterday's Wisdom, Tomorrow's Destiny

I am not sure why it has taken me so long to write, promote and share about what I want to share with all of you. Maybe because I have done this for years, see so many people doing it, receiving emails from people asking me to help them promote the company they are selling for. Directly or indirectly. (Directly is always best)

I get it. I have been with many direct sales companies before. It is not easy and it certainly becomes overwhelming and can be slightly annoying. Party this, indirect schemes, and people maybe coming to your place of business just to get in front of groups of people to see how it can benefit them.

So here's the deal, I think direct sales is awesome. I started with a skin care line back in 2006 before I got divorced. I needed to start saving money and to be honest I needed to get out of the house. I was passionate about the products. I worked hard to make it work. And it did. I was passionate, not pushy and very honest.

A few years ago when I started my yoga practice, I tried essential oils. For myself and to share with my students. I have been hooked every since. I place a drop on my students third eye before class, maybe a foot massage, and a cold wash cloth after class with lavender. I did this to make my students feel good. I never promoted. Never announced. Never asked if anyone was interested in buying or selling. I just wanted my students to feel as good as I do when experiencing essential oils. If they asked, I told them.

Fast forward to present day. After learning more and more and healing with essential oils; it is time to really share the crap out of these life changing oils.

Starting with lavender for sleeping, peppermint for congestion and my sons smelly sneakers, lemon for my water to oregano oil for inflammation of my pluera. Not to mention cooking, sore muscles, fine lines and wrinkles, cleaning the house, hormone balance and diffusing. The list is long.

Essential Oils-The Missing Link in Modern Medicine

Plants not only play a vital role in the ecological balance of our planet, but they have also been intimately linked to the phyiscal, emotional, and spiritual well-being of mankind since the beginning of time.

The plant kingdom continues to be the subject of an enormous amount of research and discovery. Most often prescription drugs are based on naturally occurring compounds from plants. Each year millions of dollars are allocated to private labs and universities that are searching for new therapeutic compounds that lie undiscovered in the bark, roots, flowers, seeds, and foliage of jungle canopies; river bottoms; forests; hillsides; and vast wilderness regions throughout the world.

Essential oils and plant extracts have been woven into history since the beginning of time and are considered by many the missing link in modern medicine.  They have been used medicinally to kill bacteria, fungi, and viruses and to combat insect, bug and snake bites in addition to treating all kinds of mysterious maladies.  Oils and extracts stimulate tissue and nerve regeneration.

Essential oils also provide exquisite fragrances to balance mood, lift spirits, dispel negative emotions and create a romantic atmosphere.

This is not a trend my friends.

Essential oils are know as Man's First Medicine! From ancient writings and traditions, it seems that aromatics were used for religious rituals, the treatment of illness and other physical and spitiutal needs, They say that the people of ancient times had a greater understanding of esstial oils than we have today.

The reintroduction of essential oils into modern medicine first began during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  During World War 1, the use of aromatic essences in civilian and military hospitals became widespread. Essential oils were used extensively for their antibacterial and wound-healing properties and developed several kinds of aromatic ointments.

A few more little pieces of information regarding essential oils vs pharmaceutical drugs that I would like to share before I finish. (my brother may not like this) ha ha 25 plus at J & J

They both have different effects on the body. Drugs usually infiltrate our bodies while having a toxic effect but essential oils on the other hand have a detoxifying effect. Pharm drugs are not really able to provide clear information for receptor sites while oils actually perform the right operations for the receptors.  Drugs usually don't provide any coverage for the immune system while oils are constantly trying to provide strength. For example, antibiotics will battle both good and bad bacteria, but essential oils will only battle the bad ones, allowing our body to maintain a strong immune system.

The information on essential oils is never ending. There is so much out there to read on these oils. It is truly amazing.

Doterra oils are carefully and thoroughly tested using the strict CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade quality protocol. If you are experienced with essential oils, you will immediately recognize the superior quality standard for safe, purely effective therapeutic-grade doterra essential oils.

Before I stop writing; I want to share with you my favorite oils.

Who wants to look their age? Who wants to look their age without spending a shit load of money on expensive skin care products? Less is more in my opinion. I don't remember the last time I really wore makeup. Who needs it? Luckily, not me at 46 1/2. Maybe some mascara. Some is genetics and most is self care. I use coconut oil mixed with frankincense or geranium. Two drops. A bottle lasts a very long time. Use it on your face, diffuse it, drink it, clean with it. So many uses for these oils for these oils without breaking the bank because they have multiple uses. So you can trash your toxic household cleaners, stop wasting money on spices that will eventually go bad and stop dropping big bucks on moisturizer when you can buy a tub a coconut oil. People say "It's so greasy and doesn't absorb". Well, are you putting it on your skin that needs to be exfoliated??? DRY BRUSH prior. Your face and your entire body. Dry brushing helps shed dead skin cells and encourages new cell renewal. By one for the face and one for your body. (CVS or Rite Aid) Then you can apply the oils on your face for smoother, brighter, younger looking skin. Or you can make your own exfoliator using coconut oil, sugar and essential oils.

Coconut oil uses are endless as well!!! Cooking, baking, and cleaning. You will save money.

I am Woman

Saturday more than 200,000 protesters attended the march in NYC and cities across the country protesting the Trump administration, applauding the #metoo movement, equal rights and so on. Thumbs up to all who attended.

Well, this blog is not about "#metoo", "I'm with Her", "Hear Our Voice", "Girls Rule", "Women Rock", or the best I have seen: "Pray For Our Pussies"!!!

Yes, it is about women. For all women not matter how old because one day you will all be here. Some may be closer than others or some may already be there.

I have been wanting to share this when I first had the call from my doctor back in December, but to be honest; I was kind of embarrassed. Blood test in. I am done!! It's official.

But after thinking of the last 4 years of  perimenopause I feel the need to share with all women about the full experience and what you can do to make the most out of menopause. Most woman dread it because of the symptoms that come along with it.

Everything you hear and everything you read will scare the shit out of you. Just do it. GOOGLE Menopause Symptoms.

  • Pain during sex
  • Fatigue
  • Night sweats
  • Hot flashes
  • Dryness
  • Loss of hair
  • Anxiety
  • Irrtability
  • Moodiness
  • Reduced Sex drive
  • Vaginal Dryness

Sounds hot right? In my opinion, it is. Every situation is different and it is all how each woman handles it. This is a milestone. Embrace it and think of it as a chance for new opportunities and potential for personal and professional growth. Everyone has the tools to make this time of your life amazing.

I am 46 years young. It just so happens that my ovaries no longer release eggs and produce estrogen.

The last 4 years have been interesting for sure. Embarrassing hot flashes anywhere at anytime. Sweat stash, red face,  and the back of my neck so wet it was like I just got out of a pool. Definitely not the most pretty site or the most comfortable.

But I learned. Learned to wear layers, tank tops under long sleeve, short sleeve over long and zip up hoodies or cardigan sweaters. Easy on. Easy off. You have a few choices to have fun with the hot flashes. You can moan and groan, cry and complain, or do things that will help make this uncomfortable, embarrassing, situation better. Here are a few tips to get through hot flashes:

  1. Don't eat spicy foods.
  2. Limit caffeine. (my biggest mistake was not cutting out coffee)
  3. Drink water. Lots of water and Green Tea. (Green tea I did. It also helps with belly fat)
  4. Nothing lasts forever. Even hot flashes. You will feel them coming on, start your strip tease, sip cold water, put your hair up, wipe off and BAMM! Done.
  5. Clary Sage essential oils is a life saver during this time. Carry it with you everywhere. Rub on the back of your neck and the bottom of your feet.
  6. Don't complain about it. Let it happen. The more you bitch, the worse it is.

And then came the night sweats!! Now, this was disruptive for sure but only for a short period of time. Again, you need to have fun during this time of your life. Most do not. Everything in life is what we make of it.

The first night I remember being scared. I thought I was sick. Getting up in the middle of the night soaked. My second thought was that I wet the bed!! Now that is something I have NEVER done. (even during my younger, partying years).

I spent hours searching and the only thing that appeared was Menopause. I ignored that because there is no way in hell that I was going through that at 42.

They continued. Every night. Changing sheets. Clothes on. Clothes off. Cold. Hot. So fucking annoying. Luckily I do not share a bed with anyone! After a few nights of this, I needed to figure out how to make the best of this so I would not be exhausted.

When  the first drop of sweat began to form, I began to think of myself practicing yoga on a Island on a very hot day. Very hot. Flowing and generating my own heat as well as the 100 degree temp. The visualization made me smile and by the time my trip was over so was that particular sequence and I knew another would be approaching shortly. So I toweled off and took a child's pose.

Few tips for night sweats:

  1. Layer in the winter.
  2. Sleep naked or in shorts and a tank in the summer.
  3. NO WHITE SHEETS.
  4. Have water and towel bedside.
  5. Wear your hair up!!!
  6. Suck on ice cubes before bed.
  7. Lavender oil!!! Diffuse it and put a few drops on a cotton ball under your pillow. Lavender will help you relax and have a better night sleep.
  8. Take Black Cohosh supplements. This will help with both hot flashes and night sweats.
  9. If you share a bed, you may want to guide him  on the same meditation to a hot yoga class. Make sure he brings a towel!! Or use plastic sheets and go on a fun slip and slide! Could be kinky!!! You can make it fun or you can make it miserable. Your call.

Mood Swings

Well, this is the topic where I must say that shockingly I wasn't so bad. I rarely went on a rampage. I never really have the need to unless it is 100% necessary. If anyone messes with me, my kids, lies, steals or cheats; I will loose my shit. Estrogen or no estrogen; STAY AWAY! ha

I found myself being short a few times at home. Not too bad thou. No real reason to. Not married, kids are well behaved,  teen hormones are kept under control and thankfully, they are very independent and don't ask for much.

Teaching yoga has helped tremendously. It is amazing how you can wake up on the wrong side of the bed, have coffee, feel blah and the moment your first student walks in and start to teach your mood vanishes!!! It is magic!!! Unless of course you fully absorbany negative energy that may be in the room, which is a no-no. This I have learned rather quickly a few years ago.

A few tips on how controlling your irritable, grumpy, defensive, hormonal self.

  • Wake up with a positive mind. Let the first thought be a positive one. Most wake up complaining. "I'm so tired", "I don't want to go to work", "Night sweats are brutal". Remove the negative thoughts ladies. It sets the path for the entire day. MISERABLE. Remember moods are contagious.
  • "A closed mouth says nothing wrong". If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it. You will have the days where everyone and everything is annoying the hell out of you for no reason.  Sit back, breathe, and let it pass. Go for a walk, go to yoga or to a quiet space in your house.  "It's thought that mood swings are related to the fluctuating levels of ovarian hormones during the transition to menopause...Woman who had severe PMS in their younger years may have more severe mood swings during perimenopause"-N.A. Menopause Society
  • Listen to music that will lift your spirits. Music is the medicine for the mind!!
  • Frankincense!!!!! My life saver the last three years!! The benefits never ending. It is the king of all oils. Frankincense reduces stress, negative emotions, prevents signs of aging, balances hormone levels, and helps prevent illness. I apply it on my crows feet, third eye, upper lip and chest, behind my ears before bed, sakral chakra, bottoms of my feet and prior to boarding any flight to prevent vertigo.
  • Surround yourself with like-minded people. During menopause you should consider removing toxic people from your life. They will only bring you down, make you grumpy and sad.
  • Talk to your spouse or BF about your moods. Communicate! Tell partner what is going on with your body and your moods. Be honest about when you need space, what is bothering you, etc...Don't make them try to figure it out. If you find yourself grumpy and you are not sure why, reflect on the day. If nothing specific went down that caused your mood; take a walk, do yoga, take a bath and separate yourself from others so the energy does not transfer to your friends and family. It's not fair.

Well now here is the topic most won't want to hear. Both men and women! LACK of SEX DRIVE!

Is it true? Does it happen? Yes and Yes. But..............It does not have to be that way.

Sorry ladies, many do and will use menopause as an excuse not to have sex with their hubby or live in. (notice I did not say boyfriend)

Here are a few tips for "lack of"

  • Maca Root!! Powder in smoothies or supplement. Not everyday thou. When I started Maca, I took it everyday and it made me constipated (everyone is different). "Maca is a root vegetable that is high in antioxidants and nutrients such as vitamin C, copper and iron. It has been used medicinally for thousands of years and has been shown to enhance sexual health and libido, improve energy, mood, memory and balance hormone levels"-Dr. Axe
  • Coconut Oil!!! Dry???? With over 500 uses, Yep!! It feels good too!! Ha ha
  • Couples Yoga
  • Communicate
  • Be honest. Don't use it as an excuse. If you are; maybe you should really think if you want to be even be with him forever.
  • Any essential oil! Diffuse it, give massages, take a bath!!

Diet

For the most part, I watch what I eat. Few tips for menopause:

  • Eat light. Smoothies and soups have been the latest and greatest in the house.
  • If you eat meat, buy organic
  • Lighten up on the booze my friends. It does not help the bloat.
  • Do a juice cleanse every once in a while. It flattens your tummy and clears out toxins.
  • Lower the carb intake
  • Fruits and Veggies. I was bad with the fruit but good with the veggies. Do both.
  • Water. Lots of water.

**I am not a nutritionist. These are just suggestions and they worked for me

Fatigue!!!

Well, this was my worst during menopause. I was never one to nap until about 3 years ago. Head nodding, falling asleep anywhere at anytime; I became a napper. Something I do not like to do. It is not productive for me when there is always so much to be done.

Tips on Fatigue

  • Limit coffee
  • TAKE YOUR NAP.
  • Listen to your body
  • If you at work and have a hard time keeping your eyes open, diffuse peppermint oil or dilute with coconut oil and rub on your chest.
  • Eleuthero Oil or supplement: Eleuthero (Siberian Ginseng) is a powerful adaptogen that has been used in Chinese Medicine since the 16th century. It has many healing benefits including: stress, enhances energy, and improves brain function. Eleuthero being an adaptogen, it helps and re-balance your adrenals. As a result, you can combat the negative effects of stress and become energized throughout your day.  Take in the morning by mouth or you can drop the liquid in your smoothie or food.

Bloat.

Yep!! It's going to happen. Your body will change. This is the one thing I struggle with. It changes. The number may not change, but your shape does.

  • Continue to exercise no matter how tired you are.
  • YOGA, YOGA, YOGA. It helps all of the above
  • Peppermint Oil, Patchouli and Ginger. No oil? Boil hot water add peppermint leaves or Ginger. Green Tea is great too.

Well, I think I am done for now. I'm tired!!! lol

Thank you for reading and I hope you take some of this advice during your next phase. It's really not bad. It's actually been pretty good!! #mindovermatter

So my friends;  I will close with this
