Benefits of Yoga and Pilates

So many people have the preconceived notion that yoga is for hippies, skinny people and that yogis sit around and smoke weed all day. We have all heard it at one time or another. “What do you guys do in there?’

“Are you smoking weed? Everyone always leaves so happy”?

There are a few things we need to get straight. Yoga is for everyone. All shapes, sizes, ages, genders and sexual orientation. And no, not everyone smokes weed.

Why are people so happy after yoga class? Well, to start SUKHA means happiness, bliss and safe space. SUKHA consists of great people that are friendly, positive, willing to learn, and they leave their egos at the door. All of the classes are “non-intimidating”. It’s okay to talk, sneeze, ask questions and chat with your neighbor. Our instructors are friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, fun, approachable and not drill sergeants.

When you practice yoga; any type of yoga, you raise serotonin, oxycontin and GABA levels in your body feeling blissful and happy. This feeling has to do with the chemical reactions in your body and opening up your seven Chakras. Yoga helps lower blood pressure, stretches the body, flushes the lymphatic system and stimulates major organs.

ANXIETY!! We hear this word almost everyday. So many people including kids are suffering from anxiety. Guess what? Yoga is more effective and less expensive (at SUKHA) than pharmaceuticals in helping with symptoms of anxiety. Yoga improves your overall mental health.

We can’t forget the physical benefits. Let’s get something straight….You DO NOT have to be a size 2 to practice yoga!! Chances are what you see on social media, the models are 20, dancers and the photo probably has been edited. At SUKHA, you will find every age group and every body type.

Why yoga?

Yoga stretches your muscles and increases your range of motion to help with flexibility. You do not have to be scared to try if you “can’t touch your toes”. If you continue your yoga practice, you will notice the muscles will start to loosen and next thing you know your palms are flat on the floor. As we get older, the aches and pains get worse. Don’t stop moving because of your age. If you have tight hips, they can strain the knee joint and tight hamstrings can lead to a flattening of the lumbar spine which can cause back pain.

Practicing yoga increases your muscle strength, tones the body, helps with weight loss and helps maintain a balanced metabolism.

We certainly can't forget about our breathing. Breathing; we do it everyday on the mat and off. Yoga helps our respiratory system by expanding our lungs and giving them space to breath and stimulating the blood flow.

Breathing helps us to relax and distract our busy minds. Are you having a crappy day? Kids driving you crazy? The boss? The co-worker? Spouse? Sit back and take a few breaths.

I am so happy to have Pilates at SUKHA. Peg Rossi has been teaching Pilates at SUKHA for a year now and the classes are growing.
