The Toms River Field of Dreams

I hope everyone had a great week.

This week was very inspiring and motivational.

The past two years at SUKHA, I have met amazing people. Men, women and children. All ages, all professions. I am so happy and proud of the bonding that goes on in both locations.

Two of my students work with children with special needs. We have been talking a lot lately about what they do. It is a gift and truly inspiring.

In conversation she mentioned a project. A project that is one of the most amazing things I have ever heard! The Toms River Field of Dreams.

A complex within the community for children and adults with special needs to enjoy the basic fundamentals of play. Baseball, basketball, golf, a playground and a walking path surrounded by a multi-sensory landscape.

Baseball. Many months of baseball. And more to come. My son Patrick. A very active, healthy baseball player. Wins and losses. Tears for losses and smiles for wins.

These boys play on a beautifully maintained field, wearing cleats, running and sliding. Sometimes not realizing how blessed they really are and on a daily basis; win or loose, we all need to remind ourselves that life on the field and off may not be perfect, but is sure as hell ain't bad.

Pause, take a step back, look in the mirror and outside our bubble and take notice of things that we are blind to.

Wednesday I met with Christian Kane. The father of Gavin. A motivated, inspirational, hard working teacher, husband and father of six children and the Founder of Field of Dreams.

I was in complete awe.

Five years ago, to date, a loaded beer truck plowed into them from behind leaving Gavin with severe brain trauma.

The idea of Field of Dreams was inspired by Christian and his wife Mary. Their older son plays baseball. "Gavin is never going to be able to do anything like this" they both said.

Now, with help from the community, corporate sponsors, and fundraising, he will have a place to play ball, golf, have snacks and have fun on a playground.

The Toms River Field of Dreams will not only benefit children and adults with special needs, but it will also become a sanctuary for caregivers.
